Symptomatic Clinical Presentation
Although contaminations are very common, symptoms caused by these factors are much less than might be expected. There are many factors and circumstances that determine who would be affected including density of the contamination, duration of exposure, pre-existing conditions, and, perhaps most importantly, a genetic predisposition to respond to certain organic antigens.

Clinical presentations resulting from a contamination can be categorized based upon mechanisms and intensity of symptoms:

No clinical symptoms 80%
Nuisance symptoms 20%
Life-altering symptoms <0.01%
Life-threatening symptoms <0.03%

Pre-existing disorders aggravated by microbial contamination

Nuisance Symptoms

  • Allergic Rhinoconjunctivitis
  • Non-allergic Rhinoconjunctivitis

Life-altering Symptoms

  • Asthma, modest
  • COPD, with asthma
  • Other disorders with Reactive lower airways

Life-threatening Symptoms

  • Asthma, severe
  • COPD, with asthma
